Ethiopia : At the Confluence of Intention, Resources, and Action

IMG_7100

In October 2010 I traveled to Ethiopia withSalaamGarage to profile the childbirth injury of Obstetric Fistula. I was touched by the stories that I heard at Hamlin Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa and by the Ethiopians whom I met. I wondered what solutions might be possible for the women with the saddest stories, especially those whose fistula repair surgeries were not successful. These women have little hope for a viable future.

Getting Canon 5D Mark2 footage and separate audio into FCP to edit

(Occasionally I like to post something technical, especially when it will help our SalaamGarage community with their digital storytelling and save them all the research hours I just clocked….) I would imagine taming a tiger would be easier because I can easily see when the tiger is trying to chew my head off. This process has a lot of invisible irritations where I don’t know what is going on until much time and processing has been eaten up (versus a [...]

INSIDE OUT is an AMAZING large-scale participatory art project…

(from our friends at TBD, note this is not a SalaamGarage project) Many of us live in a digital world of Tumblr, Twitter, and tons of other means of sharing everything we’re doing at any moment to anyone. It’s easy to forget that most people on the planet lack that voice – and, therefore, that [...]

Can you give her 5 minutes?

Picture 44

Here is a typical moment during a SalaamGarage trip. This is Sarah Henderson: http://sirenapictures.com, http://theultimateride.tv.  She lives in Portland, OR and came with us on the SalaamGarage Ethiopia trip 2010. She is awesome. We were working with the Hamlin Fistula Hospital, an absolutely amazing organization. What is happening here? Fuji donated polaroid-esque cameras to SalaamGarage so that we could give photos back to the women rather than just taking them. Sarah [...]

Leftovers.

by Amanda Koster in Eldoret, Kenya. I ordered fish last night and like most dishes in Eldoret so far, with it came a heaping pile of oily, soggy french fries. I don’t touch them because they’ll make me fat. And, if I were to indulge there is no ketchup here. Instead there is some sugary, syrupy sweet [...]

Mahatma Gandhi poem

Even as we serve others, We are working on ourselves; Every act, every work, Every gesture of genuine compassion Naturally nourishes our own hearts as well. It is not a question of who is helped first, When we attend to ourselves with compassion and mercy, More healing is made available for others. And when we [...]
