How does this work:

1. come with us / take a trip / pick a project
2. team up in country, create a project with an international NGO
3. travel around the region
4. go home, work on and share project
5. raise awareness + cause change

Who goes on the trips? Amateur and professional writers, videographers, photographers, bloggers, social media junkies, prolific net-workers, engineers, teachers, activists…

How does this work? SalaamGarage leaders work a year in advance building relationships with NGOs around the world to prepare story ideas for the participants.  You show up with your passion to experience a whole new way of travel, create a project that will have an impact on yourself, your communities and the NGO itself.

What does SalaamGarage do that can’t do myself? We team up with the NGO (vs. showing up and doing a ‘drive by shooting’ -shooting photos aimlessly and taking off), provide the guidance, support staff, translators, and cover all the logistics, cover every detail, idea and concern, and create access to places you would never be able to visit traveling on your own.

How can I afford it? Some India/07 trip a participants raised the money themselves. Danielle held a fundraiser within her community, sending about 50 people a personal letter of intention and raised the entire fee. What’s great is this way one gets very clear on their intention for the trip, builds a team back home curious about the experience the NGO, and how they can help (and they wish they could go!). You create a team and in turn, a community. SalaamGarage founder Amanda Koster has raised tens of thousands through private fundraisers and public grants. Read her blog entry “How I pay for my projects”

update form simon cordova, who raised over $5000 for India09: “I am doing pretty good. The gallery show was such a success that Im having another one next week. People where really interested in my work and wanted to hear more about what Im doing in India with SalaamGarage and Vatsalya. I was very please with meeting my goal and thrilled that anything can happen if you work hard for it. The story of how this came about? I listen to you and Mags! and had a lot of friends and family help out.”

SalaamGarage and its team leverage over a decade of relationships, integrity, transparency and professional experience working with NGOs on award-winning international social documentary projects.

Today’s leaders (be it in media, education, economics, politics, etc.) must have a global perspective to create progress, innovation, compassion and positive change.  This is an opportunity to witness this type of leadership through the NGOs we visit and within yourself.
