Local

SalaamGarage is excited to be launching the pilot for our first local storytelling project in June 2011 called SalaamGarage Local, or SGLocal for short. SGLocal-NYC is our first project for local media professionals who are committed to using their storytelling and documentary skills to make a positive impact on the social problems affecting our communities.

For our first SGLocal project we will create stories to help raise awareness and inspire action to help youth when they age-out of the foster care system. By teaming up with the Next Generation Center, part of the Children’s Aid Society in the Bronx, we aim to help cause positive social change for this under-served population of disadvantaged New Yorkers.  The team will accomplish this by creating volunteer media projects that they will submit to be published in various traditional and non-traditional media outlets.  Additionally, SalaamGarage, through its partnership with Blurb for Good, will publish the stories in a book.  100% of the proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to the Next Generation Center. Each participant will receive a $100 credit at Blurb Books and automatic publication on the soon to re-launch SalaamGarage site.

To join the team, qualified locally based media professionals will complete a brief application.  Once the application period is complete, pairs of reporters and photographers will be matched up to tell the story of a young adult who has aged-out of the foster care system.  Our initial goal is 8 subjects and 8 teams of storytellers.

Each SGLocal project will have a dedicated production team.  They will help the storytellers by lining up initial appointments and establishing deadlines. SalaamGarage will continue to have the majority of the contact with the participating non-profit org.

Please note, this pilot project for SGLocal-NYC is volunteer and only open to media professionals in the NYC metro area.  This includes Northern New Jersey and the five boroughs of NYC and it’s bordering counties.
